Crown Lengthening

CROWN LENGTHENING

FUNCTIONAL CROWN LENGTHENING:

If decay or tooth fracture extends below the gum line, your dentist may not be able to properly make a crown or other restoration for the tooth. Crown lengthening (or crown exposure) is then required.

The procedure involves adjusting the level of the gum tissue and bone around the tooth in question to create a new gum-to-tooth relationship. This allows your dentist to reach the edge of the restoration, ensuring a proper fit to the tooth. It provides enough tooth structure so the new restoration will not come loose in the future. It also allows you to clean the edge of the restoration when you brush and floss to prevent decay and gum disease. The procedure takes approximately one and a half hour.

When the procedure is completed, sutures will be removed after 7-10 days or can be resolved by itself. the final restoration then will be placed after 7-8 weeks as a healing time.

COSMETIC CROWN LENGTHENING:

This procedure is used to correct or remove the excess of gum tissues around teeth upon smiling. for example, GUMMY SMILE.

This procedure is used to correct the gummy smile and to expose more of the crown structure that has been covered by excessive gum tissues. When the procedure is completed, sutures will be dissolved by itself or removed after 7-10 days. No further treatment is needed after suture removal other than establishing good oral hygiene.
